World of Anterra is a handcrafted open-world role-playing adventure, and its lore is presented as something you dig out of the world rather than something handed to you. The official store description says you uncover the mysteries of Anterra by asking questions, interacting with the environment, reading books and exploring, and that this is how you learn about the history of magic and the ancient races. Those four activities — conversation, environment, books, exploration — are the documented routes into the setting, and the store page summarises the result as "rich lore" wrapped in a tactile interface.

Learning the Lore Instead of Being Told

The official description frames discovery as a physical act. You sneak into crypts, caves and houses, and you find secrets hidden in containers or behind breakable objects. That means the world itself is a text: a book on a shelf, a locked container and a breakable wall are all described as ways the setting is revealed.

Details beyond that method are not officially documented. Neither the store description nor the public announcements name the ancient races, describe the pantheon, or lay out a timeline, so anything more specific should be treated as unconfirmed until 81monkeys publishes it.

The History of Magic, and Magic That Will Not Sit Still

Magic is described as having a history worth studying, and separately as a present-day hazard. The official description calls Anterra a dangerous and unpredictable world "beset by unstable magics, dangerous factions, and tortured creatures". So the lore appears to run on two tracks: a scholarly past you reconstruct from books and questions, and an unstable present that shapes the danger you meet while travelling.

Water is one place where the world's systems and its fiction meet. An official Steam post on water explains that water plays an important role in Anterra and factors into multiple game mechanics, with shallow and deep water environments, and resources, creatures and enemies that can only be found in or near water, plus fishing and sailing. Visibility through water depends on depth and type — you cannot see through bog water the way you can through clean ocean water — and movement slows with depth unless a creature is a water creature.

Dangerous Factions, Tortured Creatures and Quiet Corners

The setting is defined as much by contrast as by threat. Alongside unstable magics, factions and tortured creatures, the official description promises moments of solitude and comfort: resting in friendly taverns, setting up camps to sleep the darkness away, or sitting on a log to enjoy the sights and sounds of a living world. That living quality is supported by a custom real-time lighting engine, dynamic weather and day-night cycles.

One place in Anterra is named in the public announcements: the Mancian Wastelands, where a powerful and volatile substance is generally used for mining, per the official Steam post on explosions. The same post notes that this substance can be found elsewhere in Anterra and can be used for exploration or combat, with fuses that can be found, purchased or crafted.

What the Wider World Promises

Additional setting detail comes from the game's own promotional site. According to anterrarpg.com, World of Anterra is an open world with oceans, continents, mountains, caves and dungeons, and a living world where NPCs go to work, socialise, eat meals and pursue hobbies. That page also describes a non-linear story with divergent paths, a retro-inspired dialogue system in which players can type their own questions, party-based combat, dynamic lighting and shadows, and activities including camping, crafting, building, resource gathering and fishing; it states the project was over 300% funded on Kickstarter, with that campaign ending September 23, 2022. A separate storefront listing on itch.io describes exploring regions, castles and towns among the world's locations, and lists the project as still in development.

The official store page lists the game for Windows with a 2026 release date, single-player and co-op support, and full audio in sixteen languages; no price is shown. The Steam store page carries the "100% human made" tagline. Specific named factions, the identities of the ancient races, and the rules of magic remain undocumented publicly.
